About blinds & covers
What are smart blinds and covers?
This category covers motorized window coverings (roller blinds, Venetian blinds, Roman shades, curtains and exterior shutters) plus smart garage door openers and powered window openers. Anything you'd open and close manually that benefits from a schedule or automation belongs here.
The two big use cases are comfort (the bedroom blackout blind opens with your alarm; the south-facing kitchen blind closes when the sun starts cooking the room) and energy savings (closed blinds in summer cut AC load by 10–20%; open blinds in winter let solar heat in and reduce heating cost). Smart garage door openers add remote verification: no more "did I close it?" anxiety from the office.
Which protocols do smart blinds use?
Motorized covers use the full range: Wi-Fi (Tuya, SwitchBot Hub-connected), Zigbee (Aqara, IKEA, Tuya Zigbee), Z-Wave (Somfy, Bali), Bluetooth (entry-level retrofit motors), and Matter (newer Aqara, IKEA DIRIGERA-bridged).
For battery-powered retrofit motors, Zigbee or Bluetooth is typical because they're easier on the battery. Hardwired roller motors and tube motors more often use Z-Wave or Wi-Fi. Garage door openers are predominantly Wi-Fi today, with Matter support arriving on newer models.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to replace my blinds to make them smart?
Not usually. Retrofit motors like SwitchBot, Tuya tilt motors, and Aqara roller shade drivers attach to existing blinds and tilt-rods. For chain-driven roller blinds, an in-line chain motor is even simpler. Custom motorized blinds (Lutron, IKEA FYRTUR) are cleaner-looking but cost more.
How are smart blinds powered?
Most retrofit motors use a built-in lithium battery that charges via USB-C and runs 1–6 months between charges, depending on cycles per day. Higher-end motors are mains-powered or use a small solar panel that keeps the battery topped up if the blind sits near a window.
Can a smart garage door opener replace my existing remote?
It augments rather than replaces it. Devices like Meross MSG100 wire into the existing opener's terminals, leaving the original remote and wall button intact. They add app, voice and automation control, plus an open-door sensor so you can verify state remotely.
Are smart curtain motors strong enough for heavy curtains?
Lightweight track motors (SwitchBot Curtain, Aqara) handle most domestic curtains up to ~16 kg per pair. For floor-length blackout curtains or motorized curtain rails, look for a motorized rod (Aqara B1, IKEA KADRILJ) rated for the weight. Exceeding the rating shortens motor life dramatically.
