Alexa Compatible Devices

Alexa works with thousands of smart home devices via three routes: Matter (on supported Echo hubs), the Works with Alexa skill catalogue, and direct Zigbee pairing on Echo devices that have a built-in Zigbee hub. No. Only newer Echo devices act as Matter controllers. The 4th-generation Echo, Echo Show 8 (2nd gen and later), Echo Show 10 (3rd gen), Echo Show 15, Echo Studio and recent Echo Hub all support Matter. Older Echo Dot and Echo Plus generations do not. Thread-based Matter devices additionally need an Echo with a Thread Border Router (Echo 4th gen, Echo Hub).

Open the Alexa app, tap More → Add Device. For Matter devices, pick "Other", then "Matter" and scan the QR code or enter the setup code. For skill-based devices, pick the manufacturer name from the list and link your account. For Zigbee devices on a Zigbee-enabled Echo, just say "Alexa, discover devices" and it will scan and pair them.

An Alexa skill is a cloud-to-cloud integration: your device talks to the manufacturer's cloud, which talks to Amazon's cloud, which talks to your Echo. It works for almost anything but adds latency and depends on the manufacturer's servers staying online. Matter is local. Certified Matter devices talk directly to your Echo over your home network, so commands are faster and survive a manufacturer's cloud going offline.

Zigbee, yes, directly on Echo devices that have a built-in Zigbee hub (Echo 4th gen, Echo Show 10 3rd gen, Echo Plus, Echo Show 2nd gen). Z-Wave, no, not directly. You need a bridge such as SmartThings, Home Assistant, or a vendor hub. The bridge then exposes the Z-Wave devices to Alexa as standard Alexa-compatible smart home devices.
