What are smart cameras?
Smart cameras stream live video, record motion-triggered clips, and run intelligent detection (person, vehicle, package, animal) so that you only get alerts that matter. They cover indoor cameras, outdoor cameras, video doorbells, floodlight cams, PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) cameras, and NVR systems that aggregate multiple cameras locally.
The biggest decision is cloud vs. local. Cloud cameras (Ring, Nest, Wyze, Blink) are easy to set up and well-integrated with their respective ecosystems. Local cameras (Reolink, Unifi Protect, Aqara G3 with HomeKit Secure Video, anything via Frigate on Home Assistant) keep video on your network. Better privacy, no subscription, and they keep working when the internet drops.
Which protocols do smart cameras use?
Cameras need bandwidth, so they're almost always Wi-Fi or PoE Ethernet. Doorbell cameras add a wired chime trigger. The smart-home integration layer is Matter (camera support arrived in Matter 1.2 but is still rolling out), HomeKit Secure Video (Apple ecosystem, with strong privacy), or vendor APIs surfaced via Home Assistant integrations.

Do I need a cloud subscription?
No. Many cameras (Aqara G3, Reolink, Eufy, Unifi) record to a local microSD card or NVR with no recurring cost. Cloud-only cameras (Ring, older Nest) won't keep recordings without a subscription. If you care about privacy, prefer cameras that can run fully offline through Home Assistant or Frigate.
Can smart cameras be used with HomeKit Secure Video?
Yes. HomeKit Secure Video runs the AI processing locally on a HomePod or Apple TV and stores encrypted clips in iCloud, with strong privacy guarantees. Compatible cameras include Aqara, Logitech Circle View, EVE Cam, and Netatmo. You'll need an iCloud+ plan.
Are wireless battery-powered cameras good for outdoor use?
For low-traffic spots like a back gate or shed, yes. A 6,000–10,000 mAh battery typically lasts 3–6 months between charges. For high-traffic areas (front door, driveway) you'll be charging weekly; mains or solar-panel powered models are a better fit.
What is local AI person/vehicle detection and why does it matter?
Current cameras (Reolink, Unifi Protect, Frigate-on-HA, Aqara G3) run object detection on-device or on a local NAS rather than in the cloud. Result: instant alerts that distinguish people from leaves, trash bags or shadows, and no video ever leaves your home.
